Situation:
Voltron, the legendary defender of Planet Arus, is disassembled. 150 years ago, his key Lion, the Black Lion is missing the components that allowed Voltron to assemble, stolen by Haggar, the chief technology officer of the Drule. The five Lions are functioning as guardians of their respective quadrants of the planet. Their pilots have been forced to fend for themselves without the aid of their fellow lions and have passed down their skills and the promise of recovery to their children. Now two generations later, the current Lion pilots still await the signal for Voltron's readiness.
At the same time, Zarkon, the leader of the Drule, has returned to Arus to colonize and inhabit the planet by genocide. Zarkon's home planet has been destroyed by depleting the planet's resources and not taking preventative measures to slow or stop the planet from being destroyed by the fatal effect of a killer asteroid. Zarkon's victory 150 years ago has given him the confidence of imminent victory over Arus, now that Voltron apparently no longer exists.
Arus is faced with an opportunity to regain the lost component that will allow their guardians to reactivate their primary defender. Zarkon is faced with the survival of the remainder of his race, hoping a previous victory yields sure success for an imminent war.
