39. That's The Old Ball Game

Synopsis: This one starts off with the Voltron Force finishing off the Drule’s #1 supply base on Planet Erbie. Afterwards, they round up the Drules remaining and take them prisoner. Hawkins meets with the officer of the lot, Lieutenant Antor, and assures him his men will be treated well and released soon after the base is completely dismantled. The Drule Empire views the attack on their supply base as confirmation that the Alliance is imperialistic. Hazar warns Commander Janson not to try to recapture the base on Erbie as time is ever-short for their dying home planet and finding a new world is more important. Though Hazar is still banned from the Supreme Council, he does still have some sway.

Meanwhile, the Voltron Force learns from the captured Drules about just how dire their home planet situation is, as the transient sun continues to wreak havoc. Jeff and Antor discuss how each side perceives each other, and the rampant propaganda apparent to both. Despite one of Cric’s premonitions, the teams decide to engage in a little game of spaceball (a lot like American football, by the looks of it) with Antor and some other prisoners joining in. The fun and friendliness is short-lived, as Janson’s fleet moves in to attack. The other Drule prisoners seem to think that Janson has come to free them, but Antor knows it’s all about destruction and revenge.

And indeed it is, as Janson cares little about his own people on the ground and just blasts away. After a massive battle in which the Voltron Force drove the Drules away, they are saddened to find Antor ‘hurt’ (although, since Antor remains face down, motionless and Jeff runs off looking quite upset, I’d say he really was supposed to die). Supposedly, he’ll recover, but I’m sure American censors struck again.
