The DVD

Fans have been waiting for a long while for the release of a domestic DVD set for the classic Voltron series. Come September of 2006, the first region one box sets will be available in the United States, courtesy of the Media Blasters company (click link for info direct from Media Blasters on the topic).

Here are some quick stats on the upcoming set, some info as gleaned from the above linked site. All of this is tentative info, as you'll want to watch the Media Blasters Voltron page for updates and changes to what's asserted below. I'll also try to keep up-to-date with the changes, of course.

Is this legit?
Indeed. The new official site for Voltron asserts in its news section that this company is the one licensed to release Voltron officially in the States. This will be the real deal.

When?
First of the sets, featuring classic Lion Voltron, is due for release on September 26th of 2006, with the remaining sets to follow.

The third set, in the green tin, has already come out at the time I edited this page (June 07)...next should be the red tin set but right now, I don't have a date on it or pre-order news. I'll update here as I learn, though.

How many sets?
Eight 3-disc special edition sets (24 discs in all).

How many episodes per set?
15 episodes, approximately, per 3-disc set in addition to extras. (works out to about 5 eps per disc, or 120 overall...see later notes as to how this could be broken down).
They have posted the episode synopsis for the first set, stopping at episode 15 of LV.

Will this include Vehicle Voltron?
At this time, I'm not sure. The episode spread (estimated at 120 eps overall) is more LV than they made, even if you count V3D's 26 episode run. However, classic LV and VV together turns out to be 124 total (72 LV + 52 VV), so unless there's a few discs that boast more than 5 eps, it's hard to say. However, Media Blasters has also announced they'll be releasing GoLion and Dairugger XV on DVD next year - Voltron's two parent anime series - so logic would dictate if they're releasing the anime, the Voltron release will include Vehicle Voltron. Likely following LV's entire release, as Madman did in Australia.

What about the Fleet of Doom movie?
At this time I have no clue and Media Blasters didn't mention it...but it can't be ruled out as an extra, perhaps. We'll have to wait and see.

Region?
One (United States/Canada)

Sound?
5.1 remixed audio

Remastered?
Picture restoration planned, yes.

Extras?
Promised to be "packed with extras, better than you've ever seen before." Also mentioned were plans to "present the original character sketches, designs, promos, TV ads, news footage, and other treasures from the 80's. On top of that, we will be creating all new extras with help from the original producers and staff."

Packaging?
"Premium special edition packaging" planned. See cover image below.

Is it true GoLion and DXV will also be released on DVD by Media Blasters?
Yup. They mentioned it, though no date was given other than "next year". They did say it'll be uncut and in the original Japanese language, although English sub-titles will be an option.

Cost?
The SRP has been around 39.95USD for each set, but of course many sites including amazon are offering deals and discounts.
